Book the venue
The world of DIY not for profit shows is quite competitive at the moment it's hard to find a venue for a Friday or Saturday night at many of these places as many of these places book up months in advance. Until the collective at oblong get their cool DIY for the community type venue together if you want to put a show on you have the following options for venues...
- Primrose, 280 Meanwood Road c/o Lynn (0113) 2621368 teeny capacity but free with PA and basic drum kit good for taking a chance on a show has a good atmosphere and cool management.
- Packhorse, Woodhouse Lane Nr University (0113) 2453980 again quite small, no PA included but free, nice out of the way upstairs room that has a reputation for being dark and sweaty.
- Brudenell Social Club, hyde park c/o (0113) 275 2411 the place is massive and it's £50 to hire out on a night (they'll take £20 deposit when you make the booking) however take into consideration you'll need to hire out the mother of all PA's which will increase your costs significantly but it's a great venue good atmosphere, cheap bar, lots of seats etc.
- Cardigan Arms, opp kirkstall leisure complex c/o Bob (0113) 274 2000 charge £20, capacity is small, now has an inhouse PA for £25 ask for details on how to arrange for it to be there
- Fenton, Woodhouse lane Nr University c/o Jason and Mez playitloud666@yahoo.co.uk (0113) 289 9771 charge £60 for a night (£30 deposit £30 on the night) in their upstairs room including PA and soundperson, on thursdays they have a late cheap bar.
- Josephs Well c/o Dave Bunn (0113) 2031861 or email dave@blackmarketmusic.net, The well is known and has a huge capacity however it is really expensive (varies from £125 to £200) including PA but they might try and pull one (take a cut of your door as well) good for all dayers.
- The Vine, the headrow the last time we used it it was £80 for the downstairs room with long bar, PA and soundperson included. It's bang in the city centre and has a decent capacity also check out their website www.thevineleeds.com
- The Commonplace (wharf street, leeds city centre) incredible diy community building bound to be the stuff of legends in time. They'll give you the space for a donation and they have ot have a couple of their event collective volunteers there too. You'll need to provide the PA. You can email them at commonplaceevents@lists.riseup.net but it's best if you go down to one of their weekly meetings to pitch your event to them, you can also get a good look at the space.
