MANIFESTA

Suck My Left One

Launched: Friday 26th May 2006 @ Soul Circus, Leeds.
When Bar Phono closed its doors in late 2005, those (ir)responsible for the grrrl-centric Pussy Whipped, trashy-queer-indie Razzmatazz club nights, and DIY Manifesta collective, decided to join forces to create a new sorely needed night, Suck My Left One.
We have since relocated to The CommonPlace, Leeds and dance from 9pm-2am every 4th Friday of the month. Check out the gallery for an archive of our poster & flyer artwork!

The manifesto

We are the bored scene agitators, DIY feminist/queer cultural activists, zine-devotees, ladyfesters, radical knitters, faithful dancers, mix tape lovers, house party losers, and we are not cool. We want a place where pleasure, politics and music mingle in one space, where voices of dissent lie over beats, synchronised dance routines and alcoholic drinks. We think musical genres were made to be ripped, cut up, and pasted back in ways that leave us begging for more, from queercore, riot grrrl, punk, rock n roll, electro-pop-queer-beat, to indie-trash-glam-randomness. It's the sound of the bedroom dancefloor revolution as we play songs that make your heart beat just that little bit faster. We want to create a space free from the intimidating, hipster, leeds-as-next-big-thing, dress coded, soul-sucking, profit-making mediocrity. Hegemony = enemy. They can just go and Suck Our Left One.
We welcome ladies, gentlemen, grrrls and queers of all genders, persuasions, shapes and sizes to dance recklessly without fear of ridicule, twat-titude or evaluation.
Suck My Left One is brought to you by the Leeds-based DIY feminist/queer collective Manifesta. Responsible for putting on gigs and events over the past three years, previously showcasing bands such as the Gossip, Lesbians On Ecstasy, Death Sentence: PANDA!, and Gravy Train!!!!. Manifesta aims to create supportive and inclusive spaces for the self-expression of people of all genders and sexualities. They aim to challenge sexist, homophobic, and transphobic attitudes through the organisation and promotion of cultural, social, artistic and political activities, working with a DIY ethic, to encourage the participation of a diverse range of groups and individuals. In addition to opening Suck My Left One, Manifesta aims to run girl-friendly DJ workshops to empower previously marginalised individuals with DJ skills and offer a welcoming space for their development. David Hassan from Soul Circus is clearly onboard pronouncing that, "we are very excited to be working with Manifesta on this fantastic new club night".
